Who does Modern Art Serve?

Some, like Rachel Wetzler, argue that Modern Art and its uncomfortably high prices mainly serve the rich and their upper echelons of living. The type of sales and buying of art that takes place in places like Manhattan is now interwoven with illusions of luxury, wealth, class, and celebrity. Does this take away from the essence of the art itself, if the people "enjoying" the pieces are lost in this illusion?
