Philadelphia's Urban Heat Islands

Heat Vulnerability Index, Retrieved from Phila.gov

South Philadelphia isn't a hot topic for climate change discussions, but maybe it should be: this summer South Philly was rated one of the hottest neighborhoods. Even worse, these regions tend to be the most undeserved communities. Without tree coverage, proper air conditioning, or resources to combat this issue, residents suffer through the heat every year. This has serious implications for health, economics, and sociopolitical meaning. Heat Capture, a public installation by artist and activist Eve Mosher, is aiming to change this by incorporating art as a mechanism for awareness and change.

“Art can be that sticky interstitial tissue that connects who people identify themselves with – with a particular challenge that everyone experiences in a different way…Artists play a unique role in helping to make this topic that can seem, for some, very global, very long-range far more immediate and far more palatable and far more connected to local communities.”
