Mongol Zurag Part 2

The picture above is B. Nomin's interpretation of the original "One Day in Mongolia" painting by B. Sharav. When the original work was accepted to be put on display by Documenta, the curators asked Nomin to create a new version that represented Mongolia today. She created two works with one having the same name as the original while the other was titled "Grey Palace" (Саарал ордон). "Grey Palace" is especially interesting because it strives to represent the current state of Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. Compared to the original work by Sharav, her work takes on a more chaotic appearance. She stated that it represents the messy shift of cultural identity and increased emphasis on materialism as a result of rapid urbanization and foreign influence in Mongolia today.
