Climate Change-Inspired Art Initiative in South Philly
The Philadelphia chapter of the Trust for Public Land recently received a large grant from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage to fund its "Heat Capture" project. The goal of this project is to bring to light the local, personal effects of climate change in South Philly. Instead of seeing climate change as an issue that we are removed from, the goal is to demonstrate how climate change affects local individuals--especially in impoverished neighborhoods where residents are more likely to suffer from oppressive heat. The project, starting in early 2020, is going to be "a collaboration between regional artists and community members to create public art related to climate change." Creators imagine that the art will take on many forms--from sculptures to poetry to murals--and it will reflect the feelings of South Philly residents.
