Baltimore Museum of Art will only buy artwork by women in 2020

The Baltimore Museum of Art recently announced that in 2020, they will only buy artworks made by women. Only about 4% of their current 95,000 pieces are made by women. The museum director explained that this pledge is in an effort to address the worldwide issue of gender imbalance in artistic representation. Yet there are critics of this initiative--who believe that it seems like "tokenism" and a grab for attention on behalf of the museum. Others note that there is an even greater absence of work by African American women that has not been addressed. Overall, this initiative has gained a deal of attention in the media, which at the very least brings attention to the disproportionate absence of artwork by women in museums.
