Can Food Function as a Medium of Art?
The idea of using food to create a visual work is actually something that’s been around for centuries. Whether it be a collection of food scraps within an ice cube, or the work of British sculptor Antony Gormley who created the image of sleeping bodies using loaves of bread, food maintains its function as a visual medium. However, the recent art made from food only contributes to cultural phenomena that almost exclusively fetishizes food as as something visual, underscoring the privilege one must have to be able to use it for entertainment and not just survival.
